MONTHLY GARDENING TIPS (July)

Gardens are like people - each one is different. Your garden may like to grow Azaleas, Bougainvillea or Citrus Trees and attract Thrip while my garden may like to grow Bulbs and Annuals and it may have an attraction to Aphids!

Because of this unique individualism, these monthly Gardening Tips can be used as a guide only to caring for your garden year round.

If it seems all too hard, just call our Garden Maintenance Division. We can assess your garden’s needs and take care of the job for you!

July
  • Prune your roses this month. Be sure to cut off the older greyish wood, leaving the young green or red/brown shoots. Most growth should be shortened back to about half its original length or less.

  • It’s a good time of the year to put on the gum boots and go out to inspect the drainage during the rainy periods. Rather than invest in pipes, surface contours may be all that is needed to resolve drainage problems. This could be achieved by creating subtle humps to redirect water flow.

  • Time to plant gladioli corms (if you are prepared to spray them every ten days or so for nearly half the year to keep thrip off their leaves).

  • In really cold areas it may not be wise to plant much now. For the keen gardener however, try planting flowering annuals such as delphinium, candytuft, larkspur and virginia stock.

  • Vegetables to plant now are broad beans, potatoes, peas, carrots, onions and shallots.
